Over the past couple of weeks my lawn has been invaded by fire ants. I have used the white powder sold at Lowe's to try and erradicate them but they just seem to move their ant hill around. If my lawn wasn't nice I would drench the hills and set them on fire...

Anybody have any good ideas?

the white powder (orthene) has always worked for me but only if I walked the entire yard and treated every single mound.  it's not 100% but it's worked better than True Green which I've tried on several occasions with dismal results.  I've tired everything under the sun and never been able to find something that completely got rid of them.  After 15 yrs and tons of money in trying to beat them, I just accepted it as part of living in sandy soil and you have to routinely stay on top of it..

I'll agree that Talstar works best.  But it seems ANY treatment just sorta moves the nest around.  The nest can go down four feet and spread 8 feet or so in any direction.  It can have 20 queens.

All you can really do is treat each mound till you force them somewhere else. Like your neighbors yard.

Here's a good read...

I've found that dumping gasoline -- lots and lots of gas -- on the mound and wadding up a page of newspaper with a rock inside, lighting it on fire and throwing it from a good distance might not be the most effective way, but it sure as hell is fun.

I've tried and have had success with the Amdro granules.  A little goes a long way.

I heard that if you put corn meal on the mound it will kill the queen. They eat the meal, but they can't digest it???

Let me know if it works!

I had an in vasion last year used Over and out bought at Lowes cost about $40 for my yard but did the trick. I just followed the instructions on the bag. had to use a spreader it treats the whole lawn. probably sent them to the neighbor.

The white powder does work if you have dry conditions.  The powder sticks to the ants body hair via static electricity.  The queens grooms the ant and ingests the powder.

You could try and call a company called C.O.P.S  It's 30 dollars every 3 months.  They take care of everything inside and outside of your house.  If a fire ant hill arises in the 3 months just give them a call and they will come back and treat it free of charge.

I treat my entire yard with Talstar 2-3 times a year and do not have an ant problem or any other bug for that matter.

Jon,

How much does that Talstar stuff cost, and how much area do you cover?

I forget which size bottle I have, but it comes in a concentrate that mixes 1 oz of Talstar for 1 gallon of water.  I use 2 oz for a potent mix as stated on the directions.

The last time I was there they had the pints for $49.99.  Quarts for $69.99.  Not sure on prices for the bigger stuff.  But that is what it was at Do-It-Yourself pest control the last time I picked some up.  I have a half acre lot and it takes about 2 gallons mixed to lightly cover my yard.  But only about .25 of my yard is actual grass. I don't spray the outer portions of the yard though.  I spray more around the house to keep the pests out of the house better.  So I could get about 6-8 jobs out of a pint.  My last pint lasted a while.  But since I moved out in the boondocks a little, I need to spray more often with the woods around me.

It's great stuff.  I use it inside and out.  The good thing about it is it is animal and house plant safe.  Once it's dried it is not harmful to your cats and dogs.

But the places like the do-it-yourself place is where you need to go for your pest control needs.  All the stuff they sell at places like home depot and lowes just never seems to work as well as advertised.

Just about any pest insect you can think of.

If you re-read what I said.  I said pest insects.  I have no advice to give if you have another pest (woman) you are wanting to rid yourself of.

Top- Choice and Over and Out are the same thing. Both have the active ingredient "Fiprenal" Fipernal is a widely used pesticide that you will find in many pest control products. Most commenly in the product Top spot. The stuff that you put on your dog's or cats back for flea control. It is also the active ingredient in one of the most effective termiticides available today. "Termidor". Any way back to the fire ants. Top- choice was really intended for commercial use and Over and Out for residential use. "Home Owners". But the ants dont no if they are commercial ants or not. The differecne between the 2 is that Top Choice has a higher active ingredient of Fiprenal than Over and Out. One is for one year control. The other for one season control. So you can bight the bullet and purchase 1 50lb bag of top choice for $140,50 and treat up to 25,000sf of lawn, or you can purchase the Talstar and then have to apply it up to 3 times a year to get the same results and will wind up spending about the same price for 3 seperate applications or you can get the cadilac "Top Choice" and do it right the first time. This is just my 2 cents worth.
