I remember a little while back someone had a poll for best Italian restaurant. I finally got around to trying Franco's last night and I was disappointed. I had the veal parmesan and though it to be no better than Olive Garden. My wife had baked grouper and loved it ( I had a taste and it was excellent). I never complain about price if I thoroughly enjoy a meal, but I will not go there again. Another popular Italian restraunt that did well in the poll was something like Tre's Frat????? (Three brothers). That will be my next Italian restaurant to try. I'm from Philly (30 years ago) and I know what GOOD Italian food is. Other than The Tuscan Oven for pizza, so far the best Italian I've had is the Olive Garden (how sad). Does anyone else have input?

| Agreed, Tre Fratelli is the best I've had around here. It looks like there's a new place opening on Navy Blvd., where Brews Brothers used to be. "Penelli's" or something like that. I don't know anything about them though.

I think the Franco's he ate at was in P'cola on Gregory St., not the one in Orange Beach. The one in P'cola is run by "franco" that used to be at Marchello's right before NAS. No connection between the 2 Franco's locations that I know of.
Speaking of Penneli's, looks like its gonna be a really nice restaurant. Hope the food is as good as the building looks

Olive garden is not Italian food. It's an insult to Italian food.

The place on the left at the NAS entrance was Marchello's, I think that's the spelling. I would drive in From New Orleans about once a month, and that was my first stop every time....

Yes. That was Marchellos. The Franco's in Pensacola is evidently the red haired step child of Marchello's. There is some kind of story about stolen recipes and curses, but who knows. The food at Franco's is not as good as Marchello's was.

| Besides the dressing - nothing taste as good at Francos as it did at Marchellos.. Maybe it was the retsaurant. There was a lot of ambiance ion that old building on the water.

I wouldn't doubt it about the recipes. "Franco" is the guy with the wild mustache that runs the place and he used to be one of the top dogs at Marchellos. I wonder what ever happened to the place for it to close down after so many years of success?
I agree the food isn't as good at Franco's(but its not bad). The prices are a little high too.

| It looks like someone needs to talk to Franco, or whomever operates that business. I once posted a bad experience I had with a local business and more than likely will never do it again, but I would suggest that anyone that knows the owner/operator of Franco's would let him know how some may view his/her business. I certainly would consider it valuable information to know some of the things mentioned above. I also support all consumers that voice their thoughts on how they are treated in by business of any type, as it is the Free Enterprise System at work and proof that the consumer can't be ignored, but I suggest caution if you are expressing your experience with a sporting goods dealer.

Dagwood (10/8/2007) I can't believe no one has mentioned Carraba's. My wife and I love that place. Anyone remember the Italian Restaurant at the entrance to the Navy base that closed a few years ago. Now that was Italian food!Carraba's is great. Love them! But it's not really authentic Italian. More of a "Gulf Coast with an Italian flair" type of place. I never had the pleasure of trying Marchello's. I wish I had; I've heard nothing but great things about it.

| Just curious..... I know a lot of you on here are in the Military so you may have eaten food in Italy. How many of you are comparing it to food from Italy and what you have had in the states only? I was told by a member on this board that if you go to FRANCO'S ask for them to make it Italian not the watered down American version. I had a guy tell me one time that HE KNOWS WHAT REAL CHINESE FOOD TASTE LIKE... He lived in S.F. and went to CHINA town all the time. I never told him that I had been to CHINA and Hong Kong a few times. LOL...... This all came about because he said a place sucks, (Well visited place by military folks that may have been at H.K. a time or two) and I just let it ride. I guess LOMBARDIES (sp?) in New York is REAL ITALIAN PIZZA? NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Still looking to get down to FRANCO'S and eat, the one in P'COLA. You also have to remember WHAT REGION they are cooking from. I think SICILY is the BEST but each region is different, just like in the states. I thought that the best seafood came from the west coast or the Adriatic Sea, Best pasta was North East region, Best Pizza was in Rome and the best Sauces was hands down in SICILY. Same as with the wine. I know I'm wrong but it seems that each region in Italy sure can make thier wine go with the food from that region. I've eaten at Tre's Fret and IT IS AWESOME. I thought thier Med. salad was outstanding along with thier pasta. I thought they were VERY HIGH for what you got but hey, if you want authentic you will pay for it. The bread was as good or better then what I had in Italy since it was FRESH.

Deeplines (10/9/2007) Just curious..... I know a lot of you on here are in the Military so you may have eaten food in Italy. How many of you are comparing it to food from Italy and what you have had in the states only?Yep, been there several times while on active duty. Several different parts of the country... North, South, Sicily. You're absolutely correct, the different regions' cuisine vary greatly in ingredients and style. Kind of like the U.S. If you order a bowl of gumbo in New York, they may not even know what you're talking about. If they do know, it's probably gonna suck. I left active duty 7 years ago, but I missed Italy so much I had to go back a couple years ago. Took my wife there for our anniverssary in '05. I'm hoping to make another trip within the next couple of years.

I haven't been there, but I'd like to give it a try. I can't remember the name either, but I know I've heard it advertised on the radio. I don't get out that way much, so I probably won't get to try it anytime soon.

I ate alot of Italian food in Northern Italy. I was pretty dissapointed. Its not rich like American Italian at all. However, It was in restaurants so you never know. I am sure the food cooked by the locals is much better. There was a local restaurant (no english spoken) in Florence that had some AMAZING wild boar (common in N Italy) and killer deserts. I also heared the food in Southern Italy really is much better. Guess I need to go back. On a side note. The pastry and sandwhiches (paninis) were awesome!
