If you have a recommendation, let it be known. It would also be helpful to include why and where one could obtain it.

Thanks

Nikon D40.

Why: reasonable price for a high-end camera by most standards, many lens options -- glass makes a camera, not the body -- fast shutter speed and has a wide range of "dummy" settings so you can get great pictures in many settings without having to know what you're doing.

Where: Target and prertty much everywhere else.

Cost: $350 and up depending on the lens.

Joe,

Take a look at what section this is in.  I think he is looking for something underwater.

If that's the case, get you a decent canon point and shoot camera and also get the underwater housing to go with it.  The cameras that tout themselves as underwater cameras often times leave some picture quality to be desired.  Look on ebay for the underwater housings.  They can get expensive and as much as the dang camera sometimes.

Unless you are taking pictures for National Geographic, don't spend a ton of money on an underwater camera system because, at some point, the housing is going to leak and ruin whatever camera is inside.  Good underwater housings are expensive, and when they do leak a couple years down the road, you can no longer get the camera inside unless you can find one used on Ebay.  SeaLife makes some decent, affordable systems that take good pictures.  A rule of thumb that was shared with me a while back is to take whatever depth the housing is rated for, and divide that number in half.  My SeaLife DC500 is rated for 230', so I feel fairly confident it will be okay at the limits I dive.

I've been lookin at the Sealife DC600 or 800, but just can't get myself to spend the money and leave my gun on the boat on my dives....

Scubajunkie...does the 500 take good pictures out of the water too?  If i get a digital camera for diving then I want to make sure it takes good above water pics too so I don't have to have 2 camera's for 2 different occasions!
you got any UW pics you can post to show us what a pic taken in the water AROUND here and not in crystal clear Bahama waters (like the ones on the website are..)?

I just picked up a Canon S770IS for 150 and i'm getting a Fantasea (www.fantasea.com) housing. for all of it you're looking at around 350 for everything

The best thing about diving. My girlfriend can't yell at me underwater

Diving is life, everything else is just a surface interval

Handle every situation like a dog if you can't eat it or play with it, pee on it and walk away.

I have the same camera (DC500) and I think it takes good pic's above and below the water. Here is some I have taken with it.

Olympus 770. Shock proof to 6' drop and u/w to 33'. Been snorkle rain etc and everything I need in a SMALL compact 7MP picture/3MP Video.

Hard to break and in/out off the surf/sand/water/trail in a shirt or pants pocket. Try stuffing a SLR in your front pocket...

I just got an Olympus (the green one) that is shock proof and waterproof (to 30ft) w/o a housing....but I have not checked to see if an after market housing is available yet. Its 350 at best buy and if you look at
to see the pictures it can take. It is 10 megapixel and has some pretty cool panoramic and zooming features.

How in the world did you get the ones at the surface of the water with the sharks?  Just hold you camera underwater or did you use a pole of some sort to push it under the surface???  I really like the shark ones!!!!!!!

I just hold my camera underwater. The Sharks are pretty tired by the time you get them to the boat so it pretty easy but it is a bit of a thrill. The Barracuda pic was a different story and the only time I've been scared doing it. There was 4 or 5 big Cuda's all fighting over that Mingo.

+1 I have this camera too and its bullet proof. They do make a submersible housing for it so its good at the beach, in the cooler, under a tire, in a mud puddle, dropped, frozen and slimey. Its perfect for someone like me that tends to drop things.  I have snorkled, SCUBAd, surfed with it and generally treated it like a rag doll. I could never not own one. My 2 year old threw it off the back deck into a mud puddle on Christmas, picked it up rinsed it off and kept taking pictures.

When I started looking it got a little confusing real fast. I tried a sea and sea with poor results. I finally bought a Fuji FinePix F700. The main reason was I could also buy the housing from Fuji also. It works great for me. I have had it to 130' and been using it for 4 years now. If you put a 1 GB card in it you can video for up to 35 minutes. I have shot some great video in the Keys with it.

I just got that new Olympus 1030 SW underwater camera. It is good to 30ft (10m) w/o a housing and I do believe that you can buy an underwater housing good to 130' for about 250 (best price).

I really like the camera and love that fact that it is waterproof(ish) w/o a hosing, can be dropped from 6 1/2 feet and can withstand a crushing force of 220lbs. It is a 10.5 megapixel and very customizable with and LED light for pictures at like 2cm....leads to some pretty neat wildlife shots bugs, and small fish like damsels.

I would highly recomend it I take it in the woods all the time when we hunt and it has survived drops while on a horse and takes a good shot from a moving object (car, boat) when you have the wobble proof option selected.

Best Buy has it at about 350 dollars.

good luck

Just remember, the resolution trumps the megapixels. If you are looking at quality, the higher the resolution, the more satisfied you will be with your photos.

I shoot a D70 for a living and am a newbie diver. I will probably go with a point and shoot under the water because no matter who you are, flooding a $300+ camera will make your stomach turn. And unlike the old 35mm basics, you can't fix em.
