I'm a Bostonaian...I'd NEVER hint about a tip.BUT...a few years back when gas was $.70 a gal, and Susan worked at night (got home at 9:30 pm, I delivered pizza for something to do besides sit in front of the TV in the evening. If given only coin change, I've been known to hand it back to the customer and say "no thank you, appears that you need this more then I do"

http://www.findalink.net/tippingetiquette.php

A small list of who to or not to tip.

Accountants - Nothing.

Appliance repairman - Nothing.

Auto mechanic - Not necessary. If you insist, tip about $10-20 for bills up to $500, and $50 for bills over $500.

Bagger at grocery store - Check in advance to see if the store has a no tipping policy. Most have one. If it doesn't, then $1-3 for the bagger and $1-5 for the person who loads your car.

Baptism - Nothing.

Car detailing - 15%

Car salesman - Nothing.

Car wash - $2-3 for a car; $3-5 for an SUV or large vehicle. If there is a tip jar, leave your tip there. It will be split among the workers. Otherwise, tip the person(s) who did the cleanup after the wash.

Carpet cleaners - Nothing.

Clown at children's party - $15-25 depending upon the quality of the performance and the heat level of the day. Others say 15-20% of the performers fee.

Contractors, installers, and home remodelers - Nothing. Offer a cool drink instead.

Cosmetologist at makeup counter - Nothing. Makeover specialist at department store - Nothing unless you used over 15 minutes of her time and then bought nothing.

Electricians and plumbers - Nothing. Offer a cool drink instead.

Exotic club - Nothing. Shame on you. I can't believe you would even ask.

Farriers or horse haulers- Nothing.

Financial planners - Nothing.

Graphic designer - Nothing.

Hooker - Nothing. You are being fu***d to start with.

Interior designer - Nothing.

Maids - Nothing, except at Christmastime. See above.

Mary Kay representative - Nothing.

Mortgage loan officer - Nothing.

Nurses - Nothing.

Painters (house) - Nothing. Offer them a cool drink instead.

Personal shopper or salesperson at department store - Nothing.

Pet groomers - Most pet groomers are paid based upon a commission, not a regular salary or hourly wage. Typically your tip should be 15% of the bill or $2 per dog, whichever is greater. If your dog is difficult, then tip more. Obviously, don't tip if the quality is poor.

Pet sitters - Tipping is not required, but most pet sitters will appreciate a tip. 15% is appropriate if you want to tip.

Physical therapist - Nothing.

Piano tuner - Nothing.

Realtors® or real estate agents - Nothing. The best way to say thanks is to refer people to them.

Sports arena in-seat food service - This one is tricky. At most arenas you tip the person who takes the order 15%. You tip at the time of payment, not delivery. The best thing to do is to ask before you order. You definitely should not tip both the order taker and the deliverer unless you split it.

Shoeshine - $1-2.

Swimming lesson instructor - Nothing.

Tailor or seamstress - Nothing.

Tattoo or piercing artist - 10-20% or whatever you can afford. It isn't necessary, but it is appreciated.

Telephone, security, cable, satellite, internet installers or repairmen - Nothing.

Title company closing agents - Nothing.

Travel agents - Nothing.

Tree removal service - Nothing.

Weekly lawn or landscaping service - Nothing.

Window tinting service - Nothing.

                    Window washer - Nothing.

I have been self employed installing tile & stone for almost 15 years now. We have been tipped 4-5 times. We are very proffessional keep a clean job and rely totally on referals & repeat buisiness to keep us busy. Any worker hinting about tips should be let go or at least reported to thier boss {this can be the store he subs through}. He is getting paid either by the foot or he may have bid it for a set price, you may divide the price by hours worked to get a per hour rate, but that is not how it is bid.

Whipper Snapper,

I'm wasn't saying I was a Yankee.  I'm a RED SOX fan.  We all started out in the North East for the most part anyway, then some headed south after finding out how hard you had to work up there...just kidding...right?

Don't get all wound up, pretty much everyone I know will fight to the death to defend thier background, or climb the local water tower to defend their sisters honor.

i was just screwin' with ya! half my family orginated in new hampshire.

Thanks for everyone's replys..... He did bid the job out by the square foot... I don't know how many square ft it is .... I just was basing it on the fact it's going to take him 30-35 hours to finish for around 1200.00 bucks total... The bullnosing was 200.00 extra so the original bill was around a grand.  and yes, either She or I(probably me) will call the store when the tile work is complete... I'll find out tonight whether he works for the store or just takes referrals from the store.

Stirring the POT... So;

Tuna Man:  What about the Girl that cuts your hair?

Or the Man who cuts your Hair?

The Preacher that marries you?

and the Lawyer that divorces you?

And, just to stir it really good - compare the Owner/Contractor to the Charter Boat owner/Captain.  Is there any, any correlation here?

And talk about tipping the waiters/waitresses/bartenders etc who expect it.  Isn't TIPS an acronym for "To Insure Prompt Service"?

Is tipping Good/Bad/Overated/Underutilized/Abused/or just plain not needed?

And Clay-dough...man you yankees couldn't a built the cotton gin without our cotton.  And, yeah we lost that lil ole skirmish that was supposed to be over in 6 months, but it wasn't cause we didn't try.  We still believe in States' Rights vs Federal Rule.

Come on, let's hear the feedback!

All good points. Tipping is also very different for identical services in different areas. Basically, the rule of thumb that I have ALWAYS followed, is I tip as I see appropriate, not what is expected. I earned it, I was taxed on it, I hand it out as I see appropriate until of course the County, State, or Feds start re-taxing or passing laws on how I hand out my own cash....... Nobody is ever going to agree on how to hand out a gratuity, to whom or how much, so pick and choose as you see fit, and let's catch some fish. Happy Thanksgiving to all... Enjoy your time off if your lucky enough to get it........ T

Agree no tips to contractors, except drinks or lunch as mentioned above. ( I am a contractor)

Also, are you supposed to tip the Sonic girls? I have wondered for a while.

I'd give the guy $5. Thank him for the good work and tell him you'll refer him. Be a smartass, say something nice and put a waded up $5 bill in his hand and say "here's a little something for the effort". that way he got what he wanted, you got what you wanted, and all is cool. On the next job, you can be the guy that he talks about, "I did a great job for these folks and all they did was tip me 5 stinkin dollars".

Side note: I worked for pizza hut was I was 17. They had this crappy, cheap pizza they called "bigfoot". If you recall this was a 30"x16" rectangular pizza piece of shit. The price after tax was $11.65. There was always some trailer trash that would order it and they lived a good 35 minutes from the store. Everyone hated the Bigfoot line b/c we know to expect a 35 cent tip. On a brighter note- Jubilee's on P-cola Beach tipped me $125 for delivering 30 pizzas for their Christmas party. Not bad.

I admit it, I was bored.  Slow day at the law office.

But really, If I were the lady (which I am not, and I don't want to be...cause I'm straight so don't even think about going there) I would say something like this:  "Man, you are sure doing a good job.  The last contractor I had didn't really do so well and he didn't get much of a tip; not near as good as the plumber before him or the HVAC guys."  Don't mention any numbers and just let him stew on all that.

Then in the end= zero tip.

I owned a contracting business at one time and like some of you other guys sometimes got some early achievement bonuses, or the guys got some small token. But if one of my employees would have ever hit up a customer for a tip he would have been history.

If you feel the need to tip, tell him that if there is one, it will be determined by his craftsmanship, and timeline.  And tell him that a tip is not gauranteed!
