No, the bottom snapper is not legal.  I was dumb enough to keep and post an illegal red snapper.  I'm curious what you are using as a refrence point in this picture to justify questioning my ability to follow state and federal laws.

It was a solid 17 inches.  Not huge, but legal.

Looks like someone stuck a hook in its back when it was a juvy, it just didn't geat eaten, some snappers have all of the luck, some wind up on cutting boards.

Good job on the snapper, thats certainly unusual and a pretty cool battle wound for sure!  There was a post on here a while back about some deformed looking snapper caught in Australia that were REALLY crazy looking!  I'll see if I can find the link.  And don't sweat it about posting anything on a public forum even if it truly IS undersized... there is no way to prove where or when that fish was caught... that fish could be 13 inches and caught in Costa Rica and be perfectly legal.  Same goes for when people post pics of bull reds on here and people jump their case... without considering the fact that the fish could have been caught in Mississippi or Alabama.  Anyways, congrats again on your  fish.  I love fried snapper.

Interesting deformation of that fish. I'm leaning towards it being born like that since if something took a little nip out of his back then he wouldn't have lived long not being able to make his tail move enough to feed. Still probably cooked up nice and good job on helping thin out the Red Army.

My first guess would be a triggerfish bite from the shape of the wound, and it would have happened when the fish was a juvy, but then, triggers usually go for the gut.

Sorry about your luck, Hossfly.

You never know until you go.
