Today's Forum Downtime.... Sorry Guys!

Sorry the forum was down between noon and 3:00pm today. I had some major bandwidth problems at work today and shut the forum down to see if that was the problem and to better troubleshoot the issue. It didn't change anything but it did make reading through the logs much easier. (damn this site receives a lot of traffic)

I did find one thing interesting... We've been paying Cox for a 5mb OC3 line for a year now and they never upgraded us from the 3mb connection we had before. I questioned them about this in the past and they said it was set up even though the speed test didn't seem to show it. I got busy with other issues and never thought much about it again until now. They were very generous and we now have a 7MB connection for the same price for the next 3 years! Yea Haw! Thanks COX!

Also, about 3 months ago, we brought in a second OC3 fiber line from a completely different trunk line so we have a fiber connection from the south and one from the north. While the uptime of the one line has been suburb, this helps even more in the case of a natural disaster. Combine that with the 65KW generator we installed right after Dennis and we should be good....

Anyway, I hope I didn't disrupt too many lunch schedules today with the site being offline.

i figure this is worth a shot... if anyone has an idea of who is throwing the fish carcasses in the dumpster at beach marina, could you please ask them to stop.... seeing as how we have a SW wind pretty much every afternoon during the summer, the smell of that nasty crap passes the nasal openings of every single person who drives onto the beach....

even though it's only for a few seconds, the crap is gross, and as much as the tourists get in the way, i'm sure they don't like that the first thing they smell when they get to the beach is rotting snapper bodies.

Ala.gators in Mobile Bay??

I have been driving between Mobile and Pensacola a couple of times a week for Years and have Never seen a ala.gator untill recently and Now I am seeing them in groups every time I come out of the I-10 tunnel eastbound in the body of water on the south side of the bridge near the boat ramp and also swimming in the canal behind the old Hotel. It's kinda cool seeing them swimming around down there. Wish I could stop on the bridge and check them out.

Have I simply overlooked them for ever or have there always been a bunch of gators swimming around there???

I have yet to have one in any home I have owned, but one soon will have a Man Room that is mine to do as I please with everything about it. I want an old couch, large flat screen (for College Football), Fridge, Pool Table, Outside Shower, and all kinds of assorted sporting goods (storage).

What all would you have in a dedicated Man Room in or in the backyard at your home?

Apex predators

All this talk about every fish being killed like the mega sharks and sail fish off the pier is nuts does any one under stand who the real apex predators are....US! if you can drop a bait down and bring up a legal snapper in under 30 sec there not apex predators and if Lou Nanny can catch a legal sailfish off the pier after an hour fight on a 706 thats not so apex. but most important if you can catch and put a 596.6 pound tiger freaking shark in a god dang 20ft flats boat!!!!!!!! he isn't an apex preadator!

I have a bunch of friends that I have met due to being a member of this forum. Some of which I have never seen, but I still consider them friends, and it is a large number of friends.

We communicate fairly frequently through the forum, and I look forward to hearing from them. When something is going on in their life it is important to me, Such as Susan (Ron/TunaMan's wife), but Ron or Susan and I have never met. Same goes for Wade and his Dad, who my heart goes out to, both of them.

Is there many members like this?

Who do you think you know on here, that you have never actually met?

Bass Pro Shop vs Outcast

Went to the new BPS Sunday and the place was packed with people and neat stuff. I did however do something that I have not been able to do at Outcast or GB Bait & Tackle , I left without spending one red cent.

They have made a sporting goods store rival DisneyWorld , everywhere you look there are tons of "stuff" . Problem was that for the "near shore and slightly off shore " fishing that I do, they had less than I had hoped for. "some " moldcraft, Islander, no Black Bart , and few Yo-Zuri trolling lures.

I will say that it was fun and I am glad I went, but matching shirts and name tags do not replace the sarcastic snears and B.S that I've come to look foward to around here.

Nothing the CEO of BPS can do will come close to what Tommy H., Paul R. Chris P .,,, and the list goes on and on from A thru Joe Z. have done for years.

I am sure that I could have spent a lot there ,but I'll save it for next spring when I'll be FIRST in line AGAIN .

Folding T Top

I am looking into getting a T Top for my boat and I was told about these. They will fold down and then fold again. They are made of 1.90 aluminum and are very strong or so they say. Thought you all might want to check them out. And they are pretty cheap compared to a normal T Top.

It is not hard to understand that fishermen don't tell all. The fact that noone gives out info about their secret spot is not something that just came up, and has been part of fishing and hunting for many decades if not centuries.

If you had to admit how much info or how much true info you give on the forum, how much would it be in Percentage?

Try to keep it in increments of 10, meaning 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 or 100%.

my grandfathers pride and joy, a 1953 Packard he had one of these when he was in college and about 20 years ago he decided he wanted another, so he bought one and had it fully restored. Theres not a spot on this car, i doubt you could find a cleaner car on the show room floor. Seems like every weekend he has it at a car show somewhere between foley and panama city

Guys I need a bigger boat and I have to keep it in the garage. I figure anything will be better than my 14 footer. I LOVE my boat, but it gets a little crowded at times as I expand my repertoire to include Pensacola Pass fishing. I have looked at the Boston Whaler 17 Montauk- it's 30K and I don't like yankee boat names. I know I will probably have to have the trailer rigged with a folding tongue to fit the garage but that's OK. I am looking hard at the Cape Horn 17 at this point, as well as Bay Stealth and Blazer Bay 18's, if they will fit. I hope some of you wise old salts can help me find a dry, smooth riding boat. I know it won't be perfect, but it will do better than my flat bottom 14 for what I want to do, and I can keep it at home until I get in a position to have something larger stored off site. I was pretty high on the Carolina Skiffs but a friend told me they ride wet and rough. I need the voice of experience here folks. Let me know...

Rocklobster, my little avatar there, myself and some neighbors are wrapping up a week of scalloping and floundering and thought I would post the results.

The weekend started off with a surprise, I was backing the trailer into its spot at our cottage and almost hit CAPT Tony (Voodoo Lounge). Small world. Unfortunately they were leaving the next day (or maybe it was a good thing after the jello shooters). :sick

They helped us out though. We checked some old spots one our first day and pretty came up with zilch. Tony had told us that they had gotten some right behind the cottages so we stopped on the way in and did OK, at least the day was not a zero. :bowdown

The next three days we were working shallow water on the east side of the bay because we had some newbies with us, as well as the kids. The shallow water was a better training area that the deeper water and the scallops were there, but smaller with decent size meats. Still, they were smaller scallops. That being said, we were looking for the "mother lode" of big scallops so Wednesday rocklobster and I hit a deeper spot that had yielded consistent full limit days in 2006. That yielded a total of 5 scallops in 15 minutes so we joined our friends back in the shallow water. Just goes to show that now two years are the same and why it is called "fishing" instead of "catching." :banghead

Thursday we decided to hit some of the old bomb craters to the east of Black's Island and were pulling about 12 per hole. Big scallops with big meats but while I was down in one hole, rocklobster watched 6 boats beeline for the same spot to the south of us. It was just the three Kennedys so we joined the crowd. We limited for the three of us in about an hour and a half. I looked at the charts and it turned out we were on the channel to the north of the 2006 honey hole.

Tony, we found the mother lode, just on the second to last day. Typical. :doh

Needless to say, we were one of the first boats on station today and easily limited out with our seven people. Note the quarter in the bowl of scallop meats to give a relative size measurement. Unfortunately our footprint is too large to hit it on the way out tomorrow but I have posted some pics below. If anyone is heading to PSJ PM me and I will provide some better information. Yahoo!!!

I've been pestering everyone on here for the last couple of months due to a trip I had planned to Fort Morgan....well I'm back from that trip.

For the most part...the fishing sucked...I've be going to this area for years and typically do okay off the beach, but this year I was pretty much skunked. I caught a couple cats and skipjacks, but nothing of any significance. I also took my fathers boat out to dixie bar and to a couple of rigs and for the most part I was skunked there as well....with the exception to one good fishing tale....

We weren't aware before we got there, but my fathers boat was fully operational. We were excited about it, but wanted to do some "testing" of the boat first to see if it would be water worthy. We decided to putt around in the bay a little, and then got brave enough to hit the point. I'd heard a lot about the gulp shrimp so I tied one on and worked it on the bottom for over an hour. My father was using a spoon. My son and wife were sitting happily awaiting a hook up. My son's boredom soon kicked in and he started playing around in the cooler. He then found a dead croaker we had caught off the beach a couple days prior. My son wants to use it as bait, but I tell him it's junk now and it stinks, so it won't catch anything, but he really wants to use it. We are drift fishing so I decided to use a Carolina Rig and drag it along the bottom as we drift. My son gets a quick lesson in how to hook the fish on and he sends the bait through the air and into the water.

He then sits eagerly awaiting anything to happen. Several minutes pass and the sun is scorching down on us with all it's power. We decide it's about time to pack it up and head in, due to the fact we haven't even seen a fish let alone had one hit yet. My son begs to stay a little longer and the wife shoots me the eyes, as to say we should stay. I agree and we sit another 20+ minutes. Just then the line begins to slowly peel off the reel. When I say slow I mean like if you were to grab the line and walk away from me at a walking pace. My son grabs the line and starts to reel. He doesn't really understand the idea behind the drag. I'm telling him to tightenthe drag a little, but he just doesn't get it and after a minute or two of trying to understand he hands me to pole. I tighten the drag a little and it keeps slowly peeling off. We are getting to the point where we may get spooled soon. I tighten again and really make an attempt at trying to gain some ground, but it isn't budging and it's starting to feel like we may be hung up on something. There isn't any fight in the line at all. If I pull on the line it feels like a rock is on the other side. My father turns the engines on and we begin to back up to gain some line. At this point we are about 150 yards out. We slowly back up as I reel up the line trying to keep up. As we get closer it become more and more apparent that whatever is on the other end of this line isn't moving. We really must be hung up on something. The boat goes over the top of the spot and I run to the front of the boat as my father puts it back into forward to stall out over top of the supposed hook up. I start to crank the line really putting some pressure on it. I'm trying to see if I'm gaining any ground or not, but I can't tell. Just then out of the corner of my eye I see about 6-8 ft down a very murky outline that looks like a stingray. I yell to the rest of the boat it's a stingray. At this point the boat is starting to drift again so I move again to the back of the boat. As I'm moving my father notices it's not a stingray....it's a Red Fish and it's huge....if I had to guess I would say at least 30lbs if not more. This is the biggest fish I have seen ever....everyone on the boat begins to get excited a little knowing that this long battle was for a huge fish. My father gets ready with a gaff at the side of the boat as I reel it up. I put the fish right next to the boat. At this point it is floating on it's side exhausted from the fight. He goes to gaff it and misses twice. The fish takes off again and dives to the bottom. I question my father as to why he was gaffing it and not trying to just pull it into the boat and he said we should trade places. I hand him the pole and take my place next to the boat. Just then the fish appear floating again about 15yrd from the boat. My father then proceeds to really horse the fish. Pulling as hard as he can with as much force as he can muster. The fish doesn't really move much so he hands the pole back to me. I tighten the line a little and SNAP. The line breaks. The fish is still floating about 10 yards from the boat. I remove my hat and glasses and start to jump into the water just as the fish dives and disappears for good. After a good 10 mins of griping and complaining about the fish that got away I started to think about it. I didn't want the fish anyway. What would I have done with it? I wouldn't have eaten it. I would have taken a few pictures and showed it off to some of my family that was there, but not on the boat with us. Would it have been worth it to kill the fish just to show off? Not in my opinion. I had a great fight, everyone on the boat touched the line at some point, and now I have a great story to share about the experience and about the three generations of my family that got to enjoy this awesome fish. Then to top it off, the fish got to live another day to hopefully allow someone else a turn to fight it. GREAT EXPERIENCE.

Other then that fish we didn't catch much of anything else.

My brother has been hit by criminals several times latley, all strange but this one takes the cake.He had a huge tiki hut on display at Floridas finest sheds off hwy 29 that would have taken 10 guys or a fork lift to steel, but it's gone none the less.If anyone has info that would help please let me know.If you see some one put in a new hut that you don't think had the 5-6 k to buy it please inform me or the police.

Deadline for Twic card extended?

From what I've read it looks like the deadline to get a Twic card has been extended from September to April 09. Anyone know if this is fact? I've procrastinated enough, I'm still going to my scheduled app next Monday but just wanted to know if the April deadline is true.

waverunner fishing

I know that most people on here, will probably turn their nose, but I am a single guy living in a townhouse and dont have any room to store a boat, so all I have is a waverunner, and Im looking for any advise or tips for fishing from my waverunner, I have a 2006 yamaha fx high output 3 seater, and I plan on just trolling for kings and possibly going out five or six miles and hitting some bottoms. I know this has been discussed before, but hopefully there are a few of you that are currently fishing from your ski, and can give me a tip or two on rigging my ski so when I get back from the desert I can get out there..

OK, I was gonna go out Today but the weax stopped that. Wanted to go Sword fishing Friday night but thought better of it with new engines and the boat not being in the water for 2 1/2 years, SO....................

I need someone with experience to go out with me Sat. to help break in the motors and check for things that are astray.

Everything on the boat is new except the hull. All the wiring, motors, bolts, nuts, screws, radio, ant. , you name it. Need help with what to twick (sp?) on the boat.

I am paying for all the gas and such. You only need to bring your drink of desire. I will even be bringing the food. Got to test out the Generator and the cooking stuff. LOL!!!!!!!!!!

All you will need is the guts and a fishing lic. I plan on trolling after the break in period and heading to O.B. to watch the speed boats practice. After that I'm heading into the pass and heading towards LIVE BAIT AT THE WHARF for a beer and talk to co-workers then head back via the ICW.

I have to face my challange and go through that PASS, the one that could have taken my life. :angel

I can take two so if you and your significant other want to take a chance then post or call me.

Worth heading down?

I was supposed to be coming down thi friday to fish Mexico beach. It looks as if TS/Hurricane Fay should have made landfall by Tuesday or Wednesday depending on how far north she makes it before hitting.
How detrimental is a storm to the fishing a few days afterward. I know Katrina and Ivan devatsted it, but it looks like Fay will be MUCH more calm and miss the area. Does a hurricane in the gulf mess it up for the whole gulf, or just the areas hit?

Hello to all,

My name is cole tarnok, my parents recently moved to the gulf breeze area from Picayune,Ms (about 45 minutes north of New Orleans). Anyway i have been coming down to see them every weekend or so and am looking to pick up on some techniques and decent spots to fish in the area.

Fishing here is alot different than LA and MS. Pensacola actually has clean water that is not all muddy and shallow. On the mississippi sound, you can go out a 1/2 mile and only be in 4-8 ft of water. Pensacola, hell, 100 yards out it seems to be much deeper than that. Anyway if there is any advise yall can give me then please do. I am really just tryingto find some good spots so i can take out my father who loves to fish but has no friends here. The only place we know to fish is the peir/bridge going to pensacola beach by the toll booth. And we havent had any luck. Anyway im going to try to frequent the forum as often as i can and try to pick up pointers, I hope i dont annoy you with stupid questions.

The weather has been fine here even though we had a little scare with the storm but all is fine here and the scallops are small but many. Went to the deeper water and found some large ones but sure is a lot of work . So if anyone wants to come down come on.

The Recent Adventures of a Fish Nerd

OK, OK, I haven't been on the forum in a looong time and I've missed the folks I'm proud to call friends. I apologize for being out of touch. Number of reasons for the absence including a move to Fort Walton Beach and finally a move back to Pace (long story that's not all happy), but on the up side I have finally collected all of my red snapper barotrauma and venting data, run all but one of my statistical tests, and am finally making the first of my Big Presentations.

I'm in Ottawa, Canada, at the annual American Fisheries Society meeting and will be here through Friday. I've spent 4 years on this project as some of y'all already know, and this is the first public release of what I've found. As the trip progresses I'll share details.....

I find it amazing how small of a world we live in. I boarded the plane this morning, eye-crackingly early for a 5:45am departure. I knew it would be a great trip when, as soon as I stepped onto the plane I hear a familiar "HEY!!" Lo and behold, on that same flight was Bob... aka Stressless. I never thought I'd get to hang out with one of my friends from PFF on a plane layover in Atlanta. :)

I'm staying at the Westin Ottawa, walking distance from some really cool open-air pubs, and the Parliament building where I'm hoping to see the changing of the guard. Today's activities were minimal- I set up my display poster and we had a big welcome social. With over 1000 people here it's hard to meet all of the other fish folks, but I sure as heck hope I meet as many as I can.

I have analog gauges and would like to change to digital gauges. My engine is a 2006 F115. Can I do this?

Do I need to run new wiring?
