But good day of fishing. mitch struck it rich with the bait net and we headed out. All fish were caught on cut bait....couldn't even give finger mullet away> But we finally started getting white trout. bunch of crokers, topsails, squeelers and sharks galore We had a double shark hook up once and that was fun watching us run over each other with the black tips doing their jumps and flips. Brought the one home for grilling. (when we first got to the bridge, saw someone swimming behind their boat--guess they weren't catching sharks YET>)

Flounder Limit

I say they change the flounder minimum size to 14 inches and change the bag limit from 10 per person to 5 per person

I just don't understand what one person does with 40 flounder fillets at one time? I decided to go boat shopping with JEC and I really like the Boston Whaler 15 Montauk, but they are pretty proud of it and I don't know if it would be worth it. All that boat shopping made us want to go fishing so we were torn between splashing the boat or just calling Ultralite. We opted to call Mike and talked him and Dale into having dinner with us at Fisherman's Corner. They are always telling me how good it is so I decided to go see for myself. I will definitely be going back. Well we wrapped up dinner and made it over to Mike's with our live shrimp. Ladyfish were everywhere- it made me sick. We would see healthy sized trout once in a while but it was hard to present a bait to them and get them to eat before the ladies jumped our baits. All of a sudden JEC is like "What the hell is that?" I glance over to see what he is talking about and I see something I've never seen before. It looked like a baby manta ray to me (at first). Here's a pic- we were thinking it might have been a baby look down, but now I am not so sure.

The trout fishing continued to be slow- we ended up with only one!

The shark fishing, however, was somewhat eventful. At Mike's house I fish a 7 ft. Penn Slammer rod that is pretty light with a 704 Penn reel- either 704 or 706, I don't know- the one with a bail (bale?). I don't like fishing that rod- I think it's too light for sharking without a boat, but it's the only big rod that I own that will fit in the rod holders on Mike's dock. It also has mono on it, and it needs to be braid for what we're using it for, but I figure a hooked and lost shark is more interesting than not fishing for one, and maybe I've got enough skill to somehow finesse one in with under-gunned tackle. Current has a lot to do with it and it was light last night. Well, of course we get bit by something big and there's a young guy out there with us- 18 I think. I tell him to grab the rod and go to work. He holds his own for a minute but we were definitely under-gunned for that size shark and he broke us off. Here's a shot of the fight...

Shark hook up was on cut ladyfish on the bottom. Thanks for reading...and replying. And yes, we will definitely be buying some big rod holders for Mike's dock- second time I've been schooled by sharks over there so I'm goin' back with a whoopin' stick.

Eglin AFB Flats Morning Redfish

Working the afternoon shift today so decided to out for some dawn patrol redfish. Arrived at Eglin at 6 am and the water was glass except for all the tails swirling. Waded out and dropped the first popping cork with dead shrimp in the middle of the swarm. By 6:15 had my first Red on and he ended up being a slot at 22". Was planning on releasing him due to the large number of fish in the sand holes, but he had swallowed the hook and cut his gills on retrieval. Kept him for the grill and was home by 8:30 to see my son head to his second day of Pre K. Second picture is of my 2 year daughter inspecting dads catch.

Red Report, Sunday morn

Bite was pretty slow today, sat on a small school this morning for 1/2 hour, they wouldn't even look at a the bait, regardless of what I threw. We left around 9 P.M. to catch the start of the incoming tide. The 17th landing was packed, there were only 2 spots left to park when we arrived. The bay was fairly nice, with just a light chop and the moon was big and bright. As soon as we got anchored up, the white trout/skipjack bite was on. We were catching them on the last of the outgoing tide, on the slack tide, and on the start of the incoming tide....but no sign of the reds. Around midnight the menhaden cruised by and the top of the water really started to get active. Soon after that Dad managed to snag a menhaden, so he hooked it up to his Penn 760 and freelined it with a circle hook. Not too long after he tossed it out the drag started running, and then nothing? He reeled in 1/2 a menhaden. Meanwhile we are still catching white trout and skippies. Not long after we managed to snag another menhaden and Dad chunks it back out this time hooked in the top of the middle.....bam...screaming drag....about 7 minutes later he got this nice bull to the boat

A nice 34 inches. sorry about the pic but I forgot my good camera. Well it was starting to sprinkle and the wind was picking up, not to mention it was after 2 a.m. Well we headed back to the launch with 16 nice white trout and 1 trophy pic. This is when the night goes south....I back my trailer down and trailer the boat, get it ready to ride and start to pull out when I notice the boat shaking like crazy....oh noooo...flat tire...no spare...no jack...Well now I have to start thanking all the people who either recognized me or I recognized from the forum for helping or asking if they could help. SPECIAL THANKS TO KEN (BIGRIGZ), AND RAY (KONZ), who loaned me a jack. Also thanks to Alan not sure what his forum name is but he helped as well. After driving to wal-mart and buying a rim and tire, I made it home by 5 A.M. and had to be at work at 9:30...talk about a long day. Anyway....thanks to all the great forum members who helped out I got the glastron back to Pace. Oh yeah, I almost forgot we also tried fix a flat...and an air compressor...no luck...well thanks again everybody for your help, and thanks for reading my reports.

Good luck and good fishing,

Glastronix

8/19 Orange Beach area

I took my son out to try some trolling out of Perdido Pass this am. It was a bit windier and choppier than I expected based on the NOAA report. Since we're fishing from a 22' bay boat, and are inexperienced at trolling we stayed near the pass. My son is only 11 so I;m very cautious.

We pulled a Yozuri minnow, stretch 25 and spoon. We caught two undersized kings (Our first kings- both 23") on the stretch, and got bit off once on the minnow. The kings were just outside the pass. Even though they were small it was exciting catching them for the first time.

I was having a very hard time getting the stretch 25's to run straight. They would go to the side and eventually up to the surface. I tried to see if I could tune them the same as a crankbait but I didn't have any luck. Since I'm new at doing haywire twists (don't use them much bass fishing...) I'm wondering if I'm causing the stretch to run crooked with a bad leader connection. Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

After a while (and frustration with the stretch) we ran inshore to Ingram's bayou and tried for trout. We threw DOAs for an hour and only got one undersized speck and a catfish.

I have a lot to learn about fishing this area. Unfortunately I only have a few days left before it's back to Austin, and bass fishing.

Even though the fishing has been tougher than our last visit, we're still having a great time here.

Bill

Holy Hot Dog Konz Caught a Tarpon!

That's right folks, I caught a Tarpon! Friday night Ken (bigrigz) and I decided that we were going to go out in his boat and catch some bait for beach sharking event the next night. We motored around for a while trying to net some bait without much luck.....so we decided to fish with artificials. I threw on my fav. jerk bait and Ken and I loaded up on some ladyfish and white trout. After about 2 hours we had a cooler full of fat bait and decided to cruise around looking for some specks or spanish. We saw some bait busting the surface and decided to make a few casts. On my second cast I landed another ladyfish. Ken suggested that we move but I wanted to make a couple more casts.....on my 4th cast BAM FISH OOOONNNN! The fish immediatly jumped out of the water and I started thinking "man that is a huge ladyfish" hahaha. After some screaming drag, 5 leaps, and one missed netting attemp we had the sucker in the net.......and then the shock set in and we started hooting and hollering like a bunch of kids at Disney Land! We took some pics of me releasing the fish pronto! I didn't weigh nor measure the fish b/c I wanted it in the water as soon as possible. We guesstimated the fish at around 40 inches.
Side note, the title came from something Ken said

The fish was caught on 10lb suffix and a shimano sahara 2500.

Hopedale, La

Well, it finally happened for my wife and I, we had a GREAT fishing day. We have been learning and leaning and catching one or two each trip but nothing like yesterday. We took my daughter and her husband on a trip to the Lousiana marsh to catch reds. The day was almost prefect, light wind and cooler temps.

Beautiful sunrise to start the day.

My daughters first redfish, if you look you can see red boils in the background. Thick glass minnow bait balls were gettin slammed by hardtails and schoolie spanish. After boating a few keeper spanish, I finally got a decent sized one on the line. About 10 feet from the boat, I could finally get a good look at my 2-3lb spanish when suddenly a 100lb+ Tarpon rolled out and sucked in my spanish whole. Luckily my Gotcha plug tore out of the spanish before heading down into the Tarpon's throat. Of course, I was pretty excited at seeing my first Tarpon of the year but before I could regroup from the comotion, 3-4 more 100lb+ Tarpon started rolling the surface right at the boat mostly hitting the hardtails and probably a mouthfull of glass minnows. Naturally, I only had light tackle on the boat so the Tarpon continued making their leisurely rolls on the surface within spitting distance from my boat :doh.

The day ended with 5 spanish, 4 nice sized bluefish, and several sets of ladyfish gills :) at the cost of one gotcha plug and 5 gallons of gas.

Gig

Nice Bull Reds Friday Night @ 3-Mile! (pics)

We decided to go fishing Friday night @ 3-Mile. Launched from 17th @ 7:00 and arrived at our spot. Fifteen minutes after arriving the bite was on!! Five Bull Reds were caught in a matter of two hours. We had several break offs. After catching a couple, we began to use lighter tackle to make it more challenging to get the fish in. It was a freaking BLAST!! Some of the fish took 15-20 minutes to bring in. I have never seen the bite be this good in a long time. ALL fish were safely released after pics were taken. Fish were caught on mullet strips on Owner #5 J-Hooks (bad ass hooks), and 20# floro leader with no weight, we just threw it out and let it drift and slowly sink. Some of the reds hit as soon as the bait hit the water! Awesome night!!

Reds & Sharks

Kevin and I put in at Sherman Cove about 6pm,,, got out to our spot at 6:20pm and within 5 minutes had our first shark on.... Fished from 1am to a bit after 7. Overall, I struggled. I threw artificials such as Yozumi pins minnows, DOA, gulp shrimp, power minnows and flukes. There were fishing busting in a number of the lights, but I only caught a handful of small trout and just one legal sized trout. Hooked a couple ladyfish too.
After daybreak I ran to Ingrams Bayou for the first time. There were a lot of very small trout but no keepers.

Not sure what I was doing wrong. I was extremely quiet, even shut off my sonars. I stayed as far from the lights as I could. I had been advised to fish 10lb line and tie on directly with no leader so thats what I did.

Any tips you have are welcome. I'd like to try again this coming week. I may try shrimp but I'd prefer to stick with artificials. If I do try shrimp, will livewell pumps spook the trout?

First Redfish....finally.

I am new to the forum and to saltwater fishing. I moved here a few months back and have been hooked from the beginning. I have been in the bay and the pass fishing with a buddy from work and have caught everything from sharks to white and speckled trout but have been chasing my first Red. Went to Eglin AFB flats this Friday after worked and braved the rain and thunder and it paid off. Once the rain cleared the water glassed over and there were some Redfish tailing the surface. Caught a variety of fish including a small Jack, ladyfish and a few catfish. Finally got myself into some Reds the first being 16", close but no dinner, the second just under the slot at 17.5", trust me I pinched that tail together and could not get that half inch. Finally at about 7:30 pm found another school and drifted my shrimp and popping cork into them and BAMM 20.5". Finally a Red for the grill after alot of time and effort. Sorry no pictures this time kind of tough when you are wade fishing...

THE MOMMA TROUT

This trout almost took me! I had been pullin in trout all night, they were all about the size I was used to and I was starting to get tired and a little board when I see this HUGE mouth come up and waste my shrimp! I started to reel and it wrapped me around a pole and pop, the line, hook and fish were gone, so I yell over to my friend that I just hooked the biggest trout I had ever seen and like most men he didn't believe me :blownaway . So with my blood boiling I tied back on and caught that trout. He doesn't question me any more. ;)

how to tell the age of redfish

Can you estimate how old redfish are by looking at their tale spot(s) ? just wondering

whoops..thought i was in Q&A not reports..sorry guys :(

Bull Redfish Caught By Hand (with picture)

Well, I was up to my usual summer afternoon routine today- me and my girlfriend were at one of the sand islands across from Galvez Landing listening to CD's, drinking the occasional adult beverage, and grilling on our portable grill. We had her sister with us, who happens to be married to one of my closest friends. We were in my boat and they followed us on my jet ski. Right when we pulled up I thought I spotted a shark finning on the surface. The girls saw it too but Jeff was off on the jet ski, hopefully not buzzing any anglers. Truthfully he would not be doing that, as he is one of the most accomplished anglers I know, having spent a lifetime on the water. We saw the fin again later and decided it was a cow ray. We kept seeing it and finally we saw it in close and Jeff goes sprinting down the beach to see what it is. Next thing you know he is yelling that it's a huge redfish. Then, he catches it! Bare handed! I knew at that point the bull had to be sick, and it was. Sadly, it had a wound on its head that appeared to be a cyst or an ulcer. I really don't know, but the mighty bull was definitely on its last legs, if you will allow me the poorly worded metaphor. Jeff revived the fish and released it, but we continued to see it finning until sunset. Sad day for a mighty old bull, but that's nature. We had to let it go because it was way over slot. Here's a pic, and thanks for reading, and replying.

8/15/08 First Light

Got on the water solo around 4:30 this morning. Numerous other blow ups. Bite shut down around 6:15. Great topwater action for awhile and still at work at a decent time.

8/13/08 mullet report

Got to Baywatch at about 7 am, we threw 2 times and had 7 big jarheads. For some reason, he thinks a trout is the best tasting fish in the sea, so I figured I take him out to a few in the sound. On Sat. morning we launched on the north side of the sound and headed south to the grass flats. We were welcomed by mullet schools everywhere, plenty of busting on top of the water and almost slick conditions. My dad by no means is the most experienced angler, his idea of fishing is to throw out a live mullet on a 1 oz slip lead and wait. Well my goal was to get him to catch some fish using artificial, so after about 5 minutes of insisting to throw out a topwater lure, he did, so I tied on my favorite chugbug. His first couple casts, he didn't know what the hell to do, he kind of lazily realed it in while calling it a bullshit way to fish. Third cast hits the water, he looks at me while I'm showing him how to work his rod, and splash!! He's looking at me while I see his lure get ingulfed. Hilarious, something right out of "Man's favorite Sport". So he gets this fish to the boat, turns out to be a 26 3/4 in red, on our scale 6lbs 12oz. Talk about beginners luck...

With dad he likes to eat what he catches so in the box he went. Well after that he had a liiiitttttlllllleeee bit more confidence in his lure and spent the rest of the morning casting that chugbug, resulting in 4 trout( one 22incher), 4+- ladyfish, and another small red, best morning of fishing he said he's ever had. Almost made me tear up.

Come 8:30am, with the wind coming straight from the north, we decided to try the docks on the north end for some sight fishing. With dad on the boat I wanted him to be able to see a fish, cast at the fish, and catch the fish, so I decided to rig him up with live bait instead of artificial jerk baits. I fished on the north end a few times and know just how skittish those fish are so I caught some finger mullet, 4-5inchers, rigged our rods up with long 15lb fluro leaders with 4/0 owner hooks. Hooked our mullets on and started down the docks. It now turned into a scaled down version of a cobia fishing trip, with live mullets in the water instead of eels. After messing up about 15-20 fish trying to let dad catch a fish, I finally had to cut in and take one, resulting in keeper red number two. Dad was in disbelief the whole time on the number of reds we were seeing and the depth of water that they were in.

We where back at the house by 10:30am. Father-son trip, CHECK!!! Total weight 12lbs 1oz on the two reds. Sat: only 1 bite: a small ladyfish. As we headed out Sunday we felt much better as we spotted diving birds, big blue herons in search of a meal along the bridge and just a beautiful day. Sunday ONLY 1 fish but a goodie and a real surprize: a nice 20 inch flounder caught on a live pin /8# test. Mitch was great, :bowdown again, with the net. But really--where are the steady stream of white trout? Looking down the bridge Sat and Sun saw lots of boats (all pulled in the shade and very relaxed). Saw no one with a bent pole. Val caught 2 Silver trout, 1 croaker and 4 ity bitty reds. i only hit on red and he was small too. the up side is knowing that the fish spawned last year, and so far there are a lot of growing reds.

This morning at about 530am, we set off again this time cloder to the officer club area. right off the bat, val pulled in a baby red. Right after that, she boated a huge trout. bigger trout that i have caught so far! She ended up getting another trout or two, and a hard head. I managed to keep everything of my hook except for four decent reds. enjoy the pics. they are a mix of last night and this morning. Had a group of 4 people and we had to stay in the bay because of the weather. So off we go to bottom fish a couple spots. Bluefish were real bad, eating everything that hit the water. Then we hook something BIG! 10 minutes lead to 20 and 20 to almost an hour. I was a bit stumped as to what it was, my best guess was a big shark. Well up pops the biggest damn stingray I ever saw! And he had 3 cobias with him. So we caught a couple of them, just short of legal, 30+ inches. Here is a picture of the beast, you can see one of the cobias under him.

Today had a nice trip with David and his family, he's a forum member.
