Is this a crazy idea and can it be done. Would inshore reefs in the pensacola orange beach area be worth the effort or is there already enough for the inshore bait and game fish to thrive on. It seems like to me there needs to be some more structure to attract inshore species just as there is for offshore seeing we have limited natural grasses and bottoms comparable to south west florida and louisiana . The future of this fishery stands to lose the very thing that is helping it rebound. If the 1/2" thick steel minumum for all reefs is enacted you will see your fish stocks decline resulting in tighter restrictions due to lack of habitat. Your area Corps of Engineers have taken it on themselves to use this tool to shut you down. They are bowing evidently to pressures from certain conservation {tree hugger} groups whose real wish is that you stop fishing altogether. I know this sounds ludicrous but that is the bottom line. These groups have lots of money and pay lobbyist to court these people for their cause. You will then be at the mercy of the state and the feds as to when or if ANYTHING is put out for habitat. You have people in government that are on your side but if you don't stand up and be counted they can't help you! Remember the squeaky wheel gets the grease when dealing with these type people. The one thing the recreational boater has is his size in our country. There are millions of you and if just a portion stand up and say no they will listen. Please get involved and let your opinions be known.

:hoppingmad

MARINE CONSTRUCTION DONE RIGHT!!

IF ANYONE NEEDS ANY WORK BIG OR SMALL WE ARE A COMPANY THAT HAS THE KNOWLEDGE TO DO THINGS RIGHT! I have been busy this year and have not had the time to do it. Has there been a change in the thickness of the metal for legal materials? I ran into the third person in a one month period that has told me that the metal must be 1/4" or 1/2". Another guy told me there is a movement to get the private numbers released to the public.

I went on the county website and could not find any changes.

Are these just uniformed folks looking for something to talk about or have there been some changes?

The barge is here!!!

I am happy to report that the barge has arrived from PC and is currently at Pattis. We are going to pull it and check the bottom and such before we start. We have room to store materials at pattis before deployment but they must be approved materials accordign to Mr. Turpin. We do not want to take materials that later get rejected for dumping and find a new home at Pattis. go to pensacolareefbuilders.com to see our new site. I really hope everyone takes advantage of this opportunity to rebuild some private reefs. You can email through the site or send me a pm regarding pricing on the permitting deployment of your items.

Robert Beasley

LARRS expansion

whats the latest on the expansion?

RFRA Video #2

Another snapper video - this one was shot yesterday.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PbfJaZlj68

Buy Barge space !!

I have received several emails asking about the cost to deploy various objects. The numbers are coming together and it looks like we can sell space on the barge for $1.75 a cubic ft. So, if you have something you want deployed you can bring it down and we will take it out on the next trip. To obtain the cost just multiply the Length X Width X Height X 1.75. The resulting # is the cost of deployment 30 miles from Pensacola Pass. There is no real limit on size as long as we can get it within a space of about 23 L x 11 W X 10H. The weight limit per item is around 8,000 pounds, but may go as high as 10,000 pounds depending on the shape. I hope this helps.

Road prison reefs

The Escambia County corrections road prison has a welding program being taught by a guy from George stone. They put together some very fine looking reefs with I beams and propane bottles with tops and bottoms cut out of them. they're in the classic pyramid ahape with bottles and tops and bottoms welded up and down the frame of the pyramid.
Here's the thing. The DEP( I think) says they can't be used because of what was in the tanks. Does this make sense? They have three of them sitting out in the yard waiting to be haukled off and now they are just junk piles if they can't be used. they would really make some awesome reefs.

Christmas Reefs

I've got some time off between now and the New Year and I want to go over to the RFRA and build and deploy some reefs. Only problem is I'm boatless so I'm looking for somebody that can cart them out on their boat and assist in deploying them. Not sure what the protocol is on that but if it's sharing expenses ,etc. I'm good for it.
I'm pretty much a klutz mechanically and have never welded, but Paul assured me that it was so easy even a one eyed left handed Episcopalian could do it. If anyone has a boat that they would use to deploy them and/or meeting me down there one or two days before the New Year to build them, please let me know (post, pm, email, phone - whatever works for you).
850-207-2151

Destin area reef building

Well, I've made the jump to the new forum. There seems to be two schools of thought concerning building/deploying.
On one hand, the chicken coops are 1. heavy, 2. easily available ,3.easy to permit, 4. long lasting, 5.somewhat pricey $300+ is what I hear for a deployed reef, 6. are almost impossible to deploy from a small boat. They make great reefs. However, unless you own the deployment vessel, it is impossible to know if you are the only owner of the numbers. All it takes is a GPS turned on anywhere on the deployment vessel for the GPS owner to find the reefs.

On the other hand, smaller (150# +up) reefs are 1. generally light, 2. easily constructed by almost anyone, 3.possibly somewhat more difficult to get permitted, 4. may be more prone to moving by storms, 5. inexpensive if you are a scrounger like me, 6. are easily deployed from a small boat. Several different deployments can be dumped in the same place to make a larger reef. The upside is; only you have the reef numbers unless it is found. And it's a great feeling catching a nice fish off something that you have made.

There is a place in the Gulf for both. I have built/deployed several of the larger reefs in the last few years, but hope to get in on the smaller reef program this off season.

Anyone in the Destin fishing area interested in smaller reef building, shoot me an e-mail.
